Weekly Executive Summary

Every Monday morning, Xplorr posts a leadership-ready summary of the previous week’s cloud spend. It includes week-over-week trends, top cost movers, anomaly impact, recommendation progress, and an AI-generated executive insight.

SectionWhat it shows
Week-over-week spendThis week vs last week total, with percentage change
By providerAWS, Azure, GCP spend breakdown with individual deltas
Top cost moversServices that grew or shrank the most (by %)
Anomaly summaryCount of anomalies + total excess cost from spikes
Recommendation progressHow many were applied vs still open
Savings realizedMonthly savings from applied recommendations
Budget health scorecardProgress bars for each active budget
AI executive insightA 2-sentence GPT-4o summary of what changed and what to do

The executive insight is generated by GPT-4o, which analyzes the week’s data and produces a concise, actionable summary. Examples:

“Cloud spend increased 12% week-over-week, driven primarily by a 45% spike in Lambda costs tied to the new data pipeline deployment. Consider reviewing the 8 open right-sizing recommendations — applying them would offset the increase by $1,240/mo.”

“Spend is tracking 6% under budget this month with all providers trending flat. The 3 idle RDS instances flagged last week remain unaddressed — resolving them would save $420/mo.”

The insight focuses on what’s actionable, not just what happened.

The weekly summary is sent every Monday at 9 AM UTC by default. You can customize this with the WEEKLY_SUMMARY_CRON environment variable.

The summary covers the previous 7 days (Monday to Sunday).

The weekly summary uses the same channel configuration as the daily digest. If you have channels configured with digest enabled, they’ll receive the weekly summary automatically on Mondays.

No additional setup is needed beyond having the Slack or Teams app installed and at least one channel configured.

The weekly summary is designed for:

  • Engineering managers — track team-level spend trends
  • FinOps leads — monitor budget health and recommendation adoption
  • VPs / Directors — high-level visibility without opening a dashboard
  • CFO / Finance — understand cloud cost trajectory

Consider routing it to a dedicated #cloud-costs-leadership channel to keep it visible without cluttering operational channels.
